This is a service bulletin given to dealers that explains the breakdown of the barcode and what each section means.

BMW TIS - Remote Control Key - Coding in a new remote control key Complaint: Cause: Affected Vehicles: Remote Control Key - Coding in a new remote control key R50, R53

• Additional remote control key required by customer.
• Key data removed from ZKE (Body controller BC1) for security reasons.
• Re-entering key data in the event of data loss from ZKE or in a new ZKE when data from old one was not transferrable.

Note: It is the responsibility of the selling dealer to retain the bar code information with their vehicle documentation e.g. by making a copy of the bar code label, which is supplied with the remote control key. In some countries this may require authority from the customer.
Furthermore it should be pointed out to the customer that they should also take care of the original bar code label e.g. when selling the vehicle, the barcode label should be passed to the new owner. The coding procedure is carried out using DIS or MoDIC III. Follow the instructions on screen to code the new key. The following graphic example gives a detailed breakdown of the remote control key barcode label and how to read each part of the label.

Procedure: This procedure needs to be carried out in the following circumstances: 
+ 1B = the encoding (positions., 16, 20-231. In this example =FFFFFFFFFFD6BA8F.
2 = the variable code (positions 9-141. in this example =29456F. 
3 = the base code (positions 3-81. In this example =294570.
